Turkey & Russia Have Multi-dimensional Partnership, Gul
ANKARA - There is a multi-dimensional partnership between Turkey and Russia, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said on Wednesday.
Holding a joint press conference with Russian FM Sergey Lavrov in Turkish capital of Ankara, Gul underlined the importance Turkey attaches to friendship and cooperation with Russia, and said that Turkey sees Russia as a country of strategic importance, and an important actor in its region.
Gul stated that the two countries share common views about many regional and international topics.
Noting that the bilateral trade volume between Turkey and Russia is 15 billion USD, Gul said that their target is to increase it to 25 billion.
According to information given by Gul, the projects Turkish businessmen have completed in Russia are worth 15 billion USD, while Turkish investments in Russia have reached almost 3 billion USD.
Gul recalled that around 2 million Russian tourists visited Turkey last year, and said that two countries have a serious cooperation in energy, thanks to the Blue Stream natural gas project.
``Our cooperation with Russia (in energy) will continue. This cooperation is in the best interests of the two countries,`` he said.
FM Gul noted that this visit will enhance bilateral relations, and announced that Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will visit Russia in the near future.
-THERE ARE MANY REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC-
Gul said that Lavrov and he also exchanged views about Iran`s nuclear program controversy, and underlined importance of solution of this problem through diplomatic means since Iran is a neighboring country.
Recalling that a meeting will be held in Vienna tomorrow, Gul said, ``there are many reasons to be optimistic. It seems that there is a new opportunity to solve the problem through diplomatic means. We hope this opportunity will not be missed.``
Gul said that the USA has not asked to use Turkey`s territories in case of a possible military operation against Iran.
