Erdoğan calls for unity for peace

Let’s not present opportunities to those who want to divide us, says the prime minister at the AKP convention in Şırnak

ANKARA - Turkish Daily News

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Sunday that all citizens needed to cooperate for the unity and happiness of the country, asking that no one provide any openings to those who want to divide the country.

Speaking at the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Şırnak convention on Sunday, Erdoğan said they as a party were against ethnic, religious or regional separatism.

“Just ask yourself if today is better than yesterday. If yesterday was better, don't vote for the AKP. If today is better, continue walking this path with us.”

Inflation target will be met:

Erdoğan said on Saturday he was confident of achieving the year-end inflation goal despite an increase in inflation in May, adding that he believed inflation would decrease in the next few months.

Speaking at the AKP's Antalya convention, Erdoğan said: “As of the end of 2005, inflation was 7.7 percent. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure that the inflation target for the end of the year will be met. Our central bank is also doing what it can. They are involved in making sure that the target is reached. When we came to power, the interest rate on the state's domestic borrowing was 69 percent. Nowadays, it is 16 to 17 percent. Everything will be resolved as long as we are confident. We will continue to pursue our economic program without deviation. Let's not forget the time when overnight interest rates were as high as 8,000 percent. These debts were paid by my people; however, we cannot make them pay more. We don't have that right.”

He accused past governments of printing money as a solution to their problems.

AKP national convention at the end of the year:

Erdoğan also underlined the government's determination to hold national elections on schedule, in November of next year, telling party members that the AKP national convention would be held late this year.

He said during their term in government they had tried to pay back the money the people had lost through the illegal actions of some. “YTL 6.5 billion of the YTL 8.5 billion defrauded by İmar Bank has already been paid. The rest will be paid in early 2007.”

He also criticized those who slammed the government for cooperating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “I want you to know the fact that Turkey is one of the 29 founding members of the IMF. The IMF is not an international institution that established itself in Turkey later on. Turkey is one of its partners. We have repaid YTL 45 billion in debt to the IMF up until now.”

He also said they had increased funds at the central bank from $26 billion to $58 billion. “If corruption had continued, would this have happened? Corrupt individuals can no longer use the state coffers.”

He said the seizure of 22 banks by the state had cost around $46 billion, with the public paying their debts.

“Politics has only one basis, and that's morality. There are some people who don't recognize our achievements. You need to go from door to door to tell the people what was done. No society can fully back a single party. That would be undemocratic, anyway.”

‘We are the social democrats':

He said the government had implemented many policies aimed at improving the social services provided to the people. He said books for high school students would be distributed free of charge starting from next year.

“The opposition dismisses them all. They have nothing to do with social democrats. We are the real social democrats. Those who respect social justice are the real social democrats.”

The AKP is the strongest party in the country, said the prime minister, adding that their efforts were aimed at improving the party, which was obligated to serve 73 million people.

“If some people are uncomfortable with the AKP government, it is because their money channels have been severed.”
