Kuwait seeks investments in Turkey

Kuwait interested in privatization of state-owned Halkbank, Istanbul's gas distribution company, building houses for low-income families

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah al-Salim al-Sabah yesterday expressed his country's aspirations to make investments in Turkey, which he said has made great strides in the spheres of economy and investment.

The visiting minister said he had conveyed the Kuwaiti interest in investing in Turkey to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during their talks earlier in the day.

Al-Sabah's remarks came at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gül, in Ankara.

Gül said the economic ties between Turkey and Kuwait were improving, stressing that the good performance displayed by the Turkish economy drew the attention of the entire world, in addition to Kuwait.

Al-Sabah said during the meeting with Gül, according to the Anatolia news agency, that his country was interested in Halkbank's planned privatization, Cevahir shopping center in Istanbul and the city's gas distribution company, İGDAŞ. Al-Sabah also expressed interest in construction of houses by the Kuwait Investment Authority's for low-income families in Istanbul.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister emphasized that the Kuwaiti intentions to invest in Turkey would not be affected by terror attacks, which occasionally take place in Turkey, Anatolia said.

Diplomatic sources say Kuwait has only made investments in only two countries abroad, Turkey and China.

During the meeting Gül asked al-Sabah to open the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border to Turkish trucks under a certain quota.

Referring to an initiative for cooperation between NATO and the Gulf Cooperation Council, sources say the issue was also discussed during the meeting, adding the first meeting of the initiative would be held in Kuwait in December.

The two foreign ministers also discussed Iraq, Iran, Cyprus, the Middle East and terrorism during their talks.
